I Should Be Writing

New Year, New Adventures: Setting Writing Goals and Sticking to Them

by J.C. Keough Leave a Comment

Ah, the start of a new year—a time for fresh beginnings, renewed motivation, and a stack of untouched notebooks that I promised myself I’d fill with profound thoughts. Yes, it’s that time when I dust off my keyboard, sharpen my pencils (metaphorically, of course, who uses pencils anymore?), and set writing goals that I swear I’ll stick to this year.

Goal #1: Write Every Day

As the clock strikes midnight on New Year’s Eve, I proudly declare, “This year, I will write every single day, no excuses!” Fast forward to January 2nd, and I’ll find myself binge-watching dog videos on YouTube, convinced that I’ll find inspiration in the way Rover destroys a squeaky ball.

National Novel Writing Month 2023

by J.C. Keough Leave a Comment

Hey there, fellow aspiring novelists and occasional daydreamers! Have you ever sat down with your glass of wine in a cozy wine bar, looked out the window, and thought, “You know what? I could totally write a book!” Sure, we’ve all been there. It seems like a piece of cake until you’re staring at a blank page, trying to figure out how to start your epic masterpiece.

Well, fear not, because November is here, and with it comes National Novel Writing Month, or as it’s more commonly known, NaNoWriMo. It’s that magical time of year when writers from all walks of life gather to take on the daunting challenge of writing a 50,000-word novel in just 30 days. Yes, you read that right. It’s like a literary marathon for the creative soul.

NaNoWriMo was what finally got me to sit down and start writing after years of dreaming about it. I decided to dive into this wild adventure in 2016, and guess what? I managed to write 70,000 words, nearly eighty percent of the first draft of my very first book, Dying in Dallas, during NaNoWriMo. While the title might sound ominous, the experience was a rollercoaster of hilarity and heartbreak. Let’s just say that I might have written myself into a corner or two and left my characters in some questionable situations. It took me nearly four years to get Dying in Dallas to the point where I could publish it, but without NaNoWriMo to give me the initial push, it might never have seen the light.

So, for all you brave souls gearing up for this literary sprint, I’ve got five quick tips to help you prepare for and conquer NaNoWriMo:

  1. Carve Out Time to Write: Make sure you set aside dedicated writing time in your busy schedule. NaNoWriMo is all about consistency, so find your daily writing slot and stick to it.
  2. Plan Ahead, but Not Too Much: Some writers are meticulous planners, while others are pantsters – they fly by the seat of their pants. Find your balance. An outline can help, but leave room for spontaneity.
  3. Go for a Walk: If you get stuck, take a stroll, and let your mind wander. Trust me, some of my best ideas pop up when I’m meandering around the neighborhood or a forest trail.
  4. Join a Supportive Community: The NaNoWriMo community is an incredible resource. Connect with fellow writers, attend local write-ins, and find your writing tribe for encouragement and a healthy dose of humor.
  5. Stock Up on Wine: Forget the wine flights – you’re going to need a well-stocked cellar to keep those creative juices flowing. Your local winery is about to become your second home. You didn’t think I was going to leave wine out of this, did you? Silly, silly writers. Hemingway always said, “write drunk, edit sober.”

Remember, NaNoWriMo is all about fun and the sheer joy of writing. So, whether you finish with a literary masterpiece or a novel that’s basically a giant plot hole, it’s all good. The journey is the destination, and you’ll have an adventure that’s worthy of its own book someday.

So, grab that laptop, a fresh notebook, and your trusty pen, and let the writing commence! This November, you’ve got 50,000 words to conquer, and I believe in you.

This NaNoWriMo I’ll be focused on finishing the first draft of Whining in Wolfland. This will be my second November with that as my goal. Hey, some NaNoWriMos go better than others. I hope you’ll join me with whatever novel you have banging around in your head.

Happy NaNoWriMo, my fellow word-wranglers!

May your wine glass be full and your muse ever so slightly tipsy.

Cheese Louise: Cheese Louise Cozy Mystery Book One: Good read I enjoyed reading Cheese Louise. It is a fun murder mystery that keeps you entertained and wondering who the killer is. There are many suspects in the book, but the real killer is not who you thought it would be. Ms Keough, the author, has a way of writing that makes you hate to put her book down. I hope to read more books from her in the future.

Cheese Louise: Cheese Louise Cozy Mystery Book One: An excellent Summer Read!!! I couldn't wait for this book to come out! I read the prequel, Follow, Follow Brie, and it was excellent. It is well written and humorous with a surprise ending, which made me excited for the next book in the series., The setting is in the Dallas, Texas area and I just love Keough's word choice that takes me back to Texas! Very authentic! Cheese Louise picks up the storyline, a few years later, and I still love characters, suspense, and surprises. This is a great summer read.

The Blood Will Tell: A Laramie Harper Halloween Novella (The Laramie Harper Chronicles): Laramie is growing. I can't say it was bigger in Texas but it was a different story. The book can standalone. The ending was brutal with punished betrayal. I'm not sure I agreed with the punishment since she gives others far more leeway. The people she should be avoiding, her Mom and sister, she doesn't. There is nothing funny in the abuse she takes from them. And no, there is no way a Mom who loved her would act like that. Laramie is developing into more of a person though still naïve with tendencies that could drive anyone away. The friends she has are great, what an odd assortment of known and unknown. I'm looking forward to seeing what the next book brings.

The Blood Will Tell: A Laramie Harper Halloween Novella (The Laramie Harper Chronicles): The Blood Will Tell said it all Such a fun read! While I don't suggest skipping the first book of the chronicles (Dying in Dallas), you will still enjoy "The Blood Will Tell" even if you didn't. Much like our vampire host, Laramie, our author J.C. Keough has found her pulse and keeps you reading.Keough did a beautiful job of recapping the first book, for those who haven't read it, while inviting you to a Halloween party at her mansion, The Madam. All of the characters come to life and you are drawn in to the party along with the other guests of cheating spouses, family drama, questionable friends and vampires in disguise who crash the party. You sympathize with Laramie as she tries to find love again and figure out who are friends and foes.Make sure to have a bottle of wine handy, as it is flows throughout the party, and your dog close by as dogs are always welcomed at The Madam.

The Blood Will Tell: A Laramie Harper Halloween Novella (The Laramie Harper Chronicles): The perfect amount of twists and turns... The Whine Barrel, located in the beautiful Victorian home owned by Laramie Harper, is just about ready to open for business. Laramie has decided to throw a Halloween party to entice guests to her new business in the hopes of attracting future business. The party appears to be a smashing success with costumed party goers, pint sized ghosts, and of course - vampires. Things are finally going Laramie’s way.....or are they? This novella was a joy to read with just enough twists and turns to keep you wanting more without being confusing. I can’t wait for the next installation in the Laramie Harper chronicles.

The Blood Will Tell: A Laramie Harper Halloween Novella (The Laramie Harper Chronicles): Frightfully delightful Laramie is back in a short for her First Halloween in The Madam ( her home and business). After the recent murder that took place in her home, she hoping free wine and candy will draw in the community and help erase all the negativity it’s brought. All is going well until it’s not. You can’t help love Laramie and her heart of gold but chaos follows her where ever she goes. A great short story with a heartbreaking twist that takes place two weeks after book one Dying in Dallas. A quick read totally worth reading!!!
